A Virtual Private Network, or VPN, provides an obfuscation layer between you end user and the website you are using. It prevents the website you are visiting from seeing your true IP address and using it to determine your approximate physical location. It allows the end user to prevent web services and advertisers from using this information to construct a profile about you. Anonymity was a key founding principle of the internets creation, there’s no need for people to sacrifice this right. We think everyone should use a VPN for all of their internet activities whenever possible.
There are a few free VPN services, however they aren’t very reliable, and often experience latency issues that dramatically reduce network speeds, so we recommend choosing a paid VPN service instead. When choosing a VPN provider you want to use a service that provides you with an OpenVPN configuration file, this allows you to Setup a VPN Router that will protect all traffic going through the router. We have a list of recommended VPN providers that offer the configuration file listed below:
VPN Providers
VPN PROVIDER | VPN PRICE |
---|---|
Proton VPN | $4 per Month |
Private Tunnel VPN | $35 per Year |
Cyber Ghost VPN | $48 per 6 Months |
Nord VPN | $83 per Year |
Express VPN | $99 per Year |
(Editors note we aren't affiliated in any way with the websites listed above, so if you want to be a dick and attack them that's all on you.)
Most VPN services will also offer an app for your phone, and this allows you to route all of your mobile browsing through a VPN and obfuscate which cellular service you use, and to protect your location from being revealed through a mobile cell tower. Mobile apps will still have access to your true location via your phone’s GPS, and the only way to block them is to disable location services entirely.
We strongly recommend Using a VPN Router for all of your adversarial internet activity.
